Book Day!

I started today with a pretty typical to-do list. I had story research to do, an interview, some bookkeeping and a story to write. And, of course, I had to keep up with my daily blogging. Just as I was about to transition from bookkeeping to story research, I thought, “Hey, I should check the tracking number on my books to make sure they’re on track to arrive on Friday.”

Kickstarter: If promoting sexual assault isn’t the line, there is no line

Until yesterday, I had nothing but positive things to say about Kickstarter. I spent a month luring all my friends, family and acquaintances there to support my book. I happily watched the company take 5% of their donations, because – hello – I don’t know how the internet works well enough to capture that other 95% anyway. But despite how deeply indebted to Kickstarter I felt two days ago, I am now ashamed to be associated with them in any way. I feel disgusting to have used and promoted their services.

For the past three weeks I’ve been blathering about my Kickstarter campaign to fund the self-publishing of my book, Swedish Lessons. If you haven’t heard about it, perhaps you have been comatose, or delivering a ring to Mordor, or temporarily living among wolves. If so — welcome back! — and here’s where you can get all caught up: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/natalieburg/swedish-lessons-a-memoir/

The Swedish Lessons Origin Story

So as it turns out, running a crowdfunding campaign is pretty much a full time job. This would be no big deal if I didn’t already have one of those. [giggles nervously; hopes none of her editors are reading this] The work as all been fun, however, especially this week, during which we passed 50% funding and celebrated with this ridiculous video.

Update on the Updates!

The Kickstarter campaign for my book, Swedish Lessons, has been going great so far! We’re 41% of the way to our goal, with 22 days to go. There’s still a lot of work to do, but I have been absolutely overwhelmed with the amazing support everyone has already given the project. Woo-hoo! We’re getting there!
